The best revolutionaries eventually find themselves hailed in tributes and enshrined in museums. So it's almost inevitable that nearly 30 years after the official birthdate of the internet, some of the net's best-known pioneers, radicals, and troublemakers are being inducted into the Internet Society's Hall of Fame. Bully, the Movie

Not long after my children returned to public school after two-and-a-half years of homeschooling, it started.

At this point, my older son was in 8th grade and so gym meant changing in a locker room with the other kids in his class. A couple of his peers developed a habit of coming up behind my son while he was changing, cupping his chest, and informing him that he had breasts. On the gym floor and in the hallways between classes, these boys would leer moon-faced at my child and call him "Scoops." At the time, my son shared none of this with his father or me or his inclusion teacher or the school psychologist that he was seeing once a week.

Microsoft Applies for Patent on Augmented Reality, 3-D Audio

Surround-sound systems are great for playing games and watching movies when you're in the "sweet spot" of focused audio. When you're sitting off-center, however, the audio sounds more like a garbled aural mess. But now it looks like Microsoft may have a solution.

Why Internet/GDP Ratios Make No Sense

On Monday, the Economist reprinted a chart from a BCG report, which purported to show the contribution of "the internet" to the total GDP of various different countries. All of this was rather puzzling to me, so I spoke to BCG?s Paul Zwillenberg, one of the authors of the report. And the main thing I wanted to know, of course, was how on earth you could turn ?the internet? into an annual dollar amount divisible by national GDP.

Happy 75th Birthday to George Takei: Mr. Sulu, Human Rights Champion and Heavenly Body

George Hosato Takei was born 75 years ago, and I?m proud to be one of his diehard fans. Happy 75th birthday, Mr. Sulu! I still remember seeing Hikaru Sulu for the first time on Star Trek. He was so cool, calm and masterful, and he was the helmsman of the U.S.S. Enterprise, taking the command ship of the United Federation of Planets where no one had gone before! But Takei has always forged new paths for himself and for several important human rights causes. He is instantly recognizable worldwide as the pilot of the Constitution Class starship with the registry NCC-1701.

A Wander Around the New Star Wars Miniland at Legoland Windsor

At last, the galaxy far, far away has come to Legoland Windsor. Just over a year after the Star Wars Miniland opened in Legoland California (read Dave Banks' excellent write up of that one here) the Lego master builders have recreated all the same models again and brought them to UK, and to celebrate the opening of the Star Wars Miniland Experience, they had a special weekend-long, Star Wars-themed party and called it the Star Wars Invasion.

Metamorphosis Alpha RPG Is Back ? Via Kickstarter!

My first role playing game experience wasn't Dungeons and Dragons. That opportunity would come a few weeks later. Instead, sometime during the summer of 1979 or 1980 (I really can't pin the date down) I had begged my parents to drop me off at a gaming group that met in Pensacola, Florida. A few older friends had told me about it and some of the games they were playing there. I guess my story checked out and the parents of the other kids gave their approval because I was dropped off and told I had three hours or so before they'd come and get me. So, in I walked, having no clue what to really expect other than the few vague stories of some really cool game descriptions and these campaigns that were being run. I stress these two words because I really had no clue what they meant. But all that was about to change.

In a Rigged Game, Twitter?s IPA Lets Developers Rewrite the Rules

Last month, in response to Yahoo?s wrongheaded patent infringement lawsuit against Facebook, I wrote about my experience filing patents at Yahoo. Patents I helped to file, ostensibly only for defensive purposes, were turned into blunt weapons to thwart innovation and extort money. Yesterday, Twitter announced their Innovator?s Patent Agreement, an open source contract intended to guarantee patents will only be used defensively, even when sold. The IPA seems to directly address the issues raised in my article. Still, the IPA isn?t perfect, and it needs work to protect the intentions of designers and engineers.
