Girl Genius: Omnibus Volume One

When Tor Books unexpectedly sent me a copy of the recently-collected first hardcover edition of Girl Genius: Omnibus Volume One - Agatha Awakens, it was a welcome introduction to this bizarre and entertaining steampunk adventure. This edition covers the storyline from issues one through ten of the original comic book - which covers the first three of the authors' self-published collections - and makes for an ideal gateway to the world and its characters. It's steampunk to the core, with its Industrial Revolution surroundings, airships, sideburns of true magnificence, and mad scientists gifted with "the Spark" of invention.

GeekDad Puzzle of the Week: Waffle Cuts

This morning as I was making both Max and Nora breakfast, I noticed that their meals while rather similar in content and form, were quite different in their divisibility. Max's French Toast (or "pain perdu," as he prefers to call it) can be cut an infinite number of ways, as I could vary the cuts both in width/height, as well as angle. Nora's waffle, with its rigid lines at right angles, can only be cut a finite number of different ways. So this week's GeekDad Puzzle of the Week came to me in a flash: just how many different ways could Nora's waffle be cut?

Review: The Arduino Cookbook 2nd Edition

O'Reilly Media is arguably one of the best friends a geek can have. They are legendary for their wide array of programming books and system administration books. From the Nutshell Books, The Animal Books and the Hack Series, O'Reilly Media has been providing people with knowledge and support for over 25 years. It should come as no surprise that as the hardware hacking movement took off O'Reilly was there to help. Making Brave: From Page to Screen

Pixar has been making feature-length computer-animated films since Toy Story in 1995, and all of them have been artistic and popular successes; the latest is Brave, which is notable for being both Pixar's first "fairy tale" (in other words, a magic-based story set in a mythic "once upon a time" past) and first female lead role. Like its predecessors, Brave is notable for the filmmakers' dedication to detail and quality; every element is carefully researched and designed, and the crew-members took multiple trips to Scotland to study the environment and history. In early April, I spent three days in San Francisco as Disney/Pixar's guest, where I saw several demonstrations of various aspects of this process. Over the next couple of days, I'll be sharing these stories with you.

GeekDad Puzzle of the Week Solution: Carets and Vees

Congratulations to everyone that sent in a correct response for this past' Mondays Geekdad Puzzle of the Week, "Carets and Vees." Here is the puzzle as presented:
For your shot at this week?s $50 ThinkGeek gift certificate, send in the count of counting numbers less than 2 million that are carets and vees. Carets are numbers that increase initially and then decrease, increasing and decreasing for at least one digit, and only "bouncing" one time. Repeated digits are acceptable in determining an increasing or decreasing sequence, i.e., 12231 is a caret, as is 1221, but 1233 and 1335 are not. Vees are the mirror image of carets, save that they initially decrease and later increase, with the same ability to utilize repeated digits, and the same restriction on having exactly one "bounce."

Cathedral Embraces PlayStation, Wins Converts, Ignites Conversations

When you hear about an institution, not least an ancient religious one, embracing new technology all sorts of alarm bells start to ring. Similarly when a community you are part of decides to experiment with new ways of doing things it can feel a little uneasy. Add video-games into this mix and you have an explosive concoction.

However, there has been very little of this kind of rhetoric around my work with Exeter Cathedral to help them incorporate the PlayStation 3 game into their evening worship service. In fact I've had some of the most engaging conversations in a long time about faith and about video-games.
